Thinking of Abandoning My Beloved BMPCC's. Am I Crazy?
Post Body

I currently have an OG BMPCC, and a BMPCC4K. I originally thought I would be doing more videography professionally. However, I am pursuing other things, and will likely be just doing some side work here and there, and projects for myself when I have the time. Going forward, I will be doing mostly concerts and plane-spotting for fun, and an occasional real estate or event video as a side hustle. Also, I would like something easy to travel with. I am finding that both cameras are wanting for a few things:

  • Good continuous autofocus; I often have to work quickly, and may only have one opportunity to get the shot - if I miss focus, I'm hosed. This is my biggest issue I have with both BMPCC's.
  • In body stabilization: the OG does not have it at all; the gyro stabilization on the 4K is brilliant.
  • Workflow: again, the OG can be a pain to use; the 4k is fine.
  • Travel: the OG's form factor would be perfect, however the lack of decent autofocus or stabilization is a no-go for that. The 4k is too damn bulky, and also, autofocus.....
  • Low light; neither one is great in low light.....they are ok....but for a concert I am struggling to get good footage that's not grainy.
  • The ability to get useable footage out of camera: with the OG, color grading is mandatory, the 4k can produce ok - not great - ok results with the Gen5 color science.

I have been considering alternatives, and the Sony FX30 looks like it might be a better fit for my needs (other than travel.....it might be a little big for use as a travel camera). It seems as though it has a really good image out of camera, yet can also record in LOG if I want. It seems as thought it has very good dynamic range. Crucially, it seems to have great continuous autofocus as well as IBIS. Low light seems pretty good as well.

All of that being said, I don't have the money to just buy one. If I sell both BMPCC's, I should be able to raise enough money for one. Yes I know, I will have to sell two cameras to obtain one. However, the only time I really need two cameras is when I shoot a concert, and there are ways around that (like having a second camera person). Am I crazy, or does all this sound logical?

Edit: when it comes to lenses, I use adapted EF lenses. I can adapt the same lenses to Sony.
