Am I meant to fight the zombie people at the burning tree in yharnam

I just started the game and have gotten the axe and blunderbuss, but I cant beat the horse of zombies by the tree (I think). Am I meant to fight them or is it like a stealth thing where I have to hide. They all DECIMATE my health before I can take them all out so is there any tips. Should i try other weapons?
