How do I stop Chikage from killing me?

So,
I'm doing a run of Bloodborne. Previously I was a Blades of Mercy gal and had a blast.
Now I want to try running the Chikage from Cainhurst Castle but my buddy tells me that it'll murder me 9 times out 10.
I've read up on it and it seems like it might do just that.
My only thought atm is to shore up my health?
