I hope asking a question is okay, there's no sticky or rule or anything: how do I move a bone (move with G) independently from the bones it parents, so they bend accordingly?

I don't know how else to word that, but here's two examples of what I mean:
here (with bone shapes I'm more familiar with) he does it all the time, moving with G and the rest of the bones and the mesh itself all move nicely, while when I do it the mesh deforms terribly and all the parent bones don't move at all
and here at about 3:18 (I linked to that timestamp if you're on desktop) he moves the hips down with G and the knees seem to bend with them, along with the upper body moving too.
I'm importing models and skeletons from another game, and didn't make my bones from scratch, if that has to do with the problem.
