Keyframes for changes to a Materials Alpha are not showing in timeline or graph editor

The animation plays correctly with the object fading in and out, but the keyframes do not appear in the timeline or graph editor making them hard to edit. Keyframes for the position and rotation appear correctly.
Does anyone know what the cause of this may be?
