Dilemma in creating a Zanpakuto

Okay, so I have been pondering over so many different posts and videos about zanpakuto to create my own. I have made a few before but they just didn't feel right to me. I want to make it as accurate as possible. I know the process of Asauchi and how they reflect their shape and abilities from the Shinigami they are given to. Also that most if not all the zanpakuto are Japanese inspired due to origin.

What factors could be looked at to help determine one's zanpakuto's abilities and shape?

Could the origin of a Shinigami affect the zanpakuto spirit? Ex. Norse origin, Celtic origin etc.
