Okay so I’ve seen the Final Cut with the unicorn origami at the end so should I find the theatrical ending online or does 2049 go with the Final Cut ending? And I’ve heard of some shorts that released around the same time as 2049 so should I watch those before or after? TLDR: what should I watch before 2049?
On the DvD and blu ray special editions, also on YouTube, you'll find the shorts that count as a prologue to BR2049. It sums up the period between films perfectly as a set and takes very little time to watch. While that sounds like it may be pointless because they're so short, they're really well done and it hardwires the exact social and political situation that the world has descended into before the film starts so that it's a lot easier to understand the dynamics.
I'm not sure which ending is considered Canon because there are apparently like six different versions of the original film with slight differences. I don't have the time to watch Bladerunner that many times, and whatever versions I've seen had no real differing impact on BR2049. I think the prologue is more important than the first film in this respect.
