How exactly does it work that androids have DNA?

Is it DNA in the same way that humans have it - IE 26 chromosomes, sex (x/y), reproductive biology? If so - how does that make them androids?

Or do they just have DNA for some features while others are engineered - IE bioplastic scaffolding for body parts and a brain that has input/output capabilities for downloading consciousnesses?

Clearly there are some elements of super human strength, but they still bleed, need to eat food, and have the urge to have sex, and are essentially human in almost every functional respect. I'm just more curious as to what, from a technical standpoint, makes them androids.
