I keep seeing edits of this flim everywhere. It's about time I watched it. I get that there's probably references to the first film, but will me not watching it take anything away from 2049?

Thanks.

I'm not going to. I've already watched the film about twenty times in my life, various versions of it, read some of the series, and wouldn't recommend to anyone wasting nine hours of their life wondering if the set lighting being in Ford's eye for .3 of a second makes him a Replicant. Especially as you're told quite clearly he wasn't in the second film. Sorry: but it just really isn't that important. Thanks, but really no!

The prequels are as important as the first film tbh in this sense though because without it playing mentally fill in the blanks would be a monumental task. The three prequels are (2036) Nexus Dawn, (2048) Nowhere to Run, (2022) blackout.

It doesn't really spoiler it because you know Deckard is in the film from the media, and he's only part of the case K is investigating. Overall the prequels to me are more important to the overall story of 2049 and explain clearly what has happened to create the current situation.

The first film is really Deckard's history and the subject matter of the case itself in detail. Whilst not my favourite of the two - it's great, but not my favourite - and not wholly necessary, I'd recommend watching it, because realistically it explains the gravity of the investigation. I also don't know which of the films are considered utterly canon, IIRC none of them end any differently or really affect anything in the sequel so I'd not worry about it.

I know, but the point I was trying to make is I won't be trying that myself. It's the whole first film for me gets overcooked and over dissected by forums and fandoms for "hidden meanings"... later on I saw something about the director contradicting himself years later. It tends to put people off watching it when people go "make sure it's this version because of this minor adjustment" or "this bit is important because xyz reason" it puts new fans off when we deep dive the film I think.

Watching the director's cut for me is always the canon unless there is a bit in the voiceover going "what was i on..." 😂🙏
