Maybe Don't Call Everything "Creepy"

Post Body

We (a youngish male and female couple) often visit Black’s—maybe a dozen times so far this season. We also frequented Baker Beach when we lived in the Bay Area. So we know the nude beach scene.

As pointed out, different people come to Black’s (and any beach for that matter) for varying reasons. Mostly that is part of the charm and wonder. Sometimes creepy, dangerous, or illegal behavior happens. Those can dampen your day if you let them.

We are flummoxed though that complaints of extreme behavior pack this subreddit. No doubt some questionable things happen (as they do on any beach), and there may be an increase. But honestly so far this year we have not witnessed much. Mostly we see people having a good time in nature.

We mainly go on Saturdays, but sometimes during the week. We arrive around 11 am or so, and head out by 5 or 5:30 pm. Most days we find a spot between the Gliderport trail and the volleyball courts.

Yes, we see what some people call creepy acts. Rose is very attractive and young. Men sometimes look and/or set their towels too close. When either one happens she either ignores the person or looks the other way. Sometimes she engages socially, but not often. This stuff really doesn't bother us. Like many, we do not like our photo taken, but snapping pictures on a public beach is not illegal so we just cover up or turn the other way. We do not let these things upset our day at the beach.

We have not seen any violence this year (guns, knifes, fights, verbal threats). We have spotted plenty of beach goers drinking. Comes with the territory, though we do not imbibe.

Some weeks ago we did come across a couple having sex in the open—on a week night near the landslide. The first and only time we have ever seen this at Black's. Also, last Saturday we observed a man intermittently touching himself in a suggestive way. He was positioned within view of several women but keeping to himself. Both acts were risky, not cool, disrespectful AND probably illegal. On most days, however, we do not see this stuff. Just dolphins, surfers, sunbathers, waves, sand, hang gliders, and cliffs. Once we saw a woman blowing bubbles!

People are free to observe and complain, as they do on this thread. We do not want to censor or edit anyone’s comments. But we think there may be overkill. The abundance of “creep” warnings may be misleading.

Perhaps when someone posts here they can resist placing every annoyance under the big sensational, ugly, umbrella of “creepy.” What is creepy to one person will actually be welcome or a yawner to another. What is “creepy” is very subjective.

We suggest that disrespectful, annoying, nontraditional and uncomfortable behavior that is LEGAL be called creepy. Go for it if it creeps you out. But realize others may actually welcome it or just yawn. On the other hand, if something is actually physically dangerous, a threat or illegal, call it “dangerous” or “illegal.” These extreme acts have no place on a public beach.

When someone puts staring at a nude person or walking too close for comfort under the same “creepy” umbrella as pulling a knife or masturbating in the open, they water down the seriousness of the latter offenses and make the beach scene look far worse than it actually is.

Mostly Black's is a incredible and safe place--and yes, sometimes funky. Hundreds of people flock there each day to enjoy a pleasant day in nature. Let's celebrate that!

Just our random thoughts.
