Dogs and Dolphins on Saturday

Post Body

Not sure what the policy or law is on dogs at Black’s beach, but Saturday afternoon we saw a sad scenario unfold. Two young women had brought their two miniature dogs (Maltese maybe?). Cute as a button. The women set up near us and went about snapping photos of each other in the water. The dogs never wandered an inch from the towel nor did they yelp. All was a happy time until the lifeguard truck came rolling along. The women were instructed to put the dogs on leashes and leave the beach. The dog owners were disappointed and a bit slow to act, but didn’t seem uncooperative. One lifeguard barked, “PUT THE LEASH ON NOW!” The red truck stayed on spot until the women were clearly on their way back up the trail toward the Gliderport. We know the lifeguards have a tough job enforcing codes and dealing with a sometimes combative public (as at any beach). We applaud the lifeguards. At other times we have seen them give rides to injured beachgoers, warn swimmers of dangerous conditions, and rescue fallen hikers. But we also felt torn. The women and tiny dogs were just out to enjoy the beach, and in this case not bothering a soul. There probably is a regulation that needs to be enforced. We get it. But ahhhhhhhhh. They were so cute! On another note: We spotted a large pod of dolphins not far off shore. They seemed to be basking in the sunshine and slowly moving south. No leashes for them. A nice day overall, except for the dogs getting the boot. (This is Rose writing today.)
