Hey everyone, I'm a mod of /r/femmethoughts. We've grown substantially and a lot of our growth is coming from 2x, which has meant a serious increase in casual racism, something we're really determined to stamp out.
It's totally unfair to rely on WoC to constantly report this crap. If we aren't vigilant about removing this stuff before our users see it, it'll drive away WOC, which not only sucks, but will in turn shift the demographics more. It's up to the mods to make the necessary changes to stop this sort of downward spiral, and to work hard on creating and maintaining the elements that will attract greater diversity. We know that this is our responsibility.
While we've been working on this issue, and have come up with some great new tools, we're just at the point where we really need more active mods. We plan to actively seek out WoC to apply, but it's also a top priority to us that all the mods we bring on are pretty good at identifying racial microaggressions and well-equipped to write warnings.
So we've been writing up a questionnaire to give out to people interested in moderating. But we could really use some additional questions about handling racial microaggressions, invalidations and derails.
What would you like to see us ask people? What are the most important issues to you that mods be good about recognising and handling? Any other advice for us as we struggle to deal with the demographic and attitude shift caused by swift growth? Any other feedback or advice you want to give us? We're here to listen.
