Given the increased amount of traffic to the sub, here’s a reminder about how our moderation works.
This subreddit is heavily moderated because it is designed to be a safe space for black women. Content is curated to center Black women and prioritize community safety as well as Reddit’s site-wide rules and guidelines.
To promote respectful, on-topic discussions, and ensure there is content variety, posts are routinely removed by the auto-moderator and our mod team. Below are examples of why posts (and comments) may be removed. (This is not a comprehensive list of reasons.)
- Off-topic content: Spam, topics that don’t center black women, and surveys are not fitting for this community.
- Duplicate posts: Posts should be unique. A post may be considered a duplicate post when it covers the topic from nearly the same angle as existing posts.
- Insincere posts: Participating in good faith is required. Posts that are meant to create drama, troll, sow discord, and are generally disrespectful are not allowed.
- Automated content controls: Posts/comments may not appear right away or be permanently removed, due to factors like account karma, our spam filters, and Reddit's crowd control function.
We understand many are experiencing uncertainty, anger, and fear right now due to the U.S. election--we’re feeling it too--but a healthy subreddit has a variety of content. Many posts about the election, politics, and voting have been removed and will continue to be removed because they are duplicate posts. It is not personal; you are not being shadowbanned or silenced. This is simply how this sub needs to operate to maintain the community and provide a reasonable user experience for all.
Every thought, comment, and general reaction about the election or other hot topics do not require separate posts. Keep in mind: when this subreddit experiences high traffic, moderation does not scale with it. Dozens of duplicate posts make it nearly impossible to moderate the content that is here and keep out trolls.
Search the subreddit for your topic before creating a new post. If there is already a post about your topic, add your thoughts there. Questions about why your post was removed? Check the post for a removal comment or send a message to modmail. Do not create posts to complain about content moderation or ask why your post was removed.
Please remember the mod team that handles 90% of the work to maintain this online space are black women just like you. We are unpaid volunteers who give our time daily to keep this space alive and healthy because we care about this community. The only agenda is upholding the community goal: to provide a safe space for Black women.
The admins recently removed our ability to go private without their approval so that moderators of large subreddits can't protest their decisions as a company anymore! So even if we wanted to, we can't.

Reddit admins are just the employees of Reddit Inc. There are black employees, but there aren't a ton of them.

This space was created in protest over a decade ago. We were tired of an inactive top mod refusing to keep the white supremacists from trolling us. So we moved and we have stayed public through waves of white supremacist attacks, mockery, our mods being banned by admins, the murder of George Floyd and our open letter to the admins, the Reddit admins finally creating an explicit policy against racism, and the last Trump presidency. We will never go private and we literally can't anymore without approval from the admins.
We have a discord that requires verification to enter. That's as close as a private space we'll ever have. We are the face of black women on Reddit and we have never backed down to anyone on this site. People need to be able to find and view this space easily.
This is a safe space for black women to hang out, yes, but we are also one of the largest public spaces for black women on the entire internet. Taking it away would be doing a lot of people a disservice.
