Hi it's us again! I hope you don't mind another thread, but I thought people who'd read my other posts might like an update on Moxie and his bladder blockage issue.
So yesterday he was given a catheter flush out procedure to clear the crystals from his body and hopefully get things flowing smoothly. They'd told me when we booked it that he'd be kept overnight for the catheter and IV to stay in, but I got a call at 8pm that he'd ripped the catheter out and was "too fiesty" to be kept overnight. They asked me to come pick him up as they thought he'd be better at home with me. I ran and got him right away, set up everything in my bedroom he'd need and had a very sleepless night. He seemed well overnight mostly. Unhappy with the cone and IV port they'd left in place, but he slept part of the night cuddled against my legs which was nice.
This morning I let him interact with his brother and they were both running around being playful and he seemed pretty good. However he refused breakfast and wouldn't drink. He hadn't peed overnight, but someone peed during the time they were allowed to be together and unfortunately I didn't observe whether it was him or his brother. I separated them for the rest of the day to more accurately monitor as the vets office wanted to be sure he was peeing before they took the port out.
By 2pm he still hadn't eaten, drank or peed and was now visibly uncomfortable and lethargic. I called the vet and they told me they couldn't help because they had no overnight monitoring and I needed to bring him to the ER vet.
When I brought him to the ER vet they were shocked he'd been sent home after only having the catheter in for 6hrs post flush procedure. They said it needs to be in for 48hrs after. However, his bladder wasn't full despite him not peeing all day so he may not have another blockage. They admitted him and will be monitoring him over night (they're 24hr staffed unlike the first place which I hadn't understood when I'd first booked for a 24hr stay at the initial vet). He'll be getting lots of painkillers and anxiety meds (why didn't they give something to calm him at the first place if he was "too fiesty"? Grrr) as well as pushing IV fluids to hopefully get him to pee and flush thing out on his own. If he does prove to be blocked again they'll do another flush procedure and properly drain with catheter for 48hrs after it this time.
Sigh... So stressful and so expensive. I'm seriously pissed off at the first vets for being incompetent. But I felt very relieved when I left him at the ER vet. They seemed much more confident and capable to handle things.
Here's hoping the next 24hrs goes well 🤞
