The "Meta" Doesn't Matter for you
Post Body

I had an interesting experience at open mat. As i stretched, a blue belt explained to me that outside ashi, while an inherently weaker position than inside ashi, was making a comeback in the meta due to the various strategies of defending inside ashi and also how the false reap has changed the leglock meta. After explaining these things to me he asked to roll.

I entered the round with a lot of trepidation as i felt certain his superior knowledge of the meta would lead me into deep water of which I was ignorant.

And then I knee cut him 8 times, allowing him to re-guard after each time and try for a fresh leg entanglement.

The point of this dumb story is that the "meta" doesn't matter for him and for almost everyone on this sub it also does not matter, despite the various posts here that discuss the latest development in the techniques used on the blackbelt competition scene.

If you are a world class competitor who is competing against guys who all have an amazing base in the fundamentals of bjj and you need a small edge on specific opponents you will be fighting, feel free to ignore this. Also, if you are just trying some stuff out because it looks neat and you are having some fun, that's great.

But if you are putting in work trying to get better at bjj, the meta stuff largely ends up being white noise and distraction. That blue belt would be better off spending the next six months working on guard retention and control from the bottom as would a number of guys in my gym. Anyway, just take all the meta posts with a grain of salt. my $.02
