Preparation of Aluminum Amalgam
Post Body

Materials Needed:

Paper shredder

Aluminum foil or granules (clean and pure)

Mercury chloride

Distilled water

1000ml round bottom boiling flask (or 500ml)

Gloves, gas mask, fume hood, lab coat, etc

Synthesis of the amalgam:

Shred aluminum foil into small shreds using a paper shredder or use aluminum granules. Ensure the aluminum is clean and as pure as possible. Place the aluminum pieces or granules into the round bottom boiling flask.

Prepare a solution of mercury chloride by dissolving it in distilled water if it’s not already in solution form.

Carefully add the mercury chloride solution to the aluminum in the glass container. Swirl gently to mix the reactants.

Cleaning the amalgam (activated aluminum):

Filter the liquid off and perform 2 washings with cold distilled water. The remaining amalgam will stay inside the round bottom flask. Which you can then use to reduce any imine of your choosing to an amine

Everyone's favorite toxic sludge πŸ€€πŸ‘Œ

Note: A lot of aluminum foil isn't pure aluminum which can interfere with the amalgamation.

Use a paper shredder for uniform strands and make sure you have proper stirring going before you add the aluminum.
