On Monday I put up a progressive pride flag and a regular rainbow flag up on either side of the door of the room I live in. I’m currently living in a long term care facility, but I still wanted to celebrate pride month.
Wednesday, the Director of Nursing came in and woke me up telling me it was against regulation and they needed to be taken down. I asked to see this regulation, but she never came back. I was then told by several workers that the maintenance man was the one complaining, but I just recently reported him to the administrator, so I feel it might be retaliation.
Thursday, the office manager came and woke me up to tell me again it was against regulation. I again asked to see this regulation, and was given nothing. I told him this was homophobic and retaliatory and if they take them down I would be going to the news.
Today, I woke up to staff saying someone threatened to call the state about the flags, as if they could do anything. Besides, this place has never fixed anything the state has fined them for. The administrator and her boss from corporate came into my room to talk about it and gave me a few new excuses. He said corporate prefers nothing be on the walls besides their decorations. I said, I’ve been here since July last year and i know you’ve visited a few times and corporate has NEVER said anything about decorations outside of people’s rooms until I put up my pride flags. They kept lying until I said they were being homophobic and they couldn’t change my mind so please leave.
I’m so angry and just sad. I just wanted to have flags up for pride.
