how to differentiate platonic/emotional connection and a romantic one

something iād struggled with a bit for a while and would like to seek other opinions.
for example, having a friend that you spend lots of time with, feel a strong emotional connection to, physical with (non-sexual) and just.. overall care deeply for, how would or what would differentiate this from a romantic partner? (specifically with people of the same sex)
i ask genuinely, not to put off ignorance!:)
