Does progesterone only pill work if started after ovulation or do I HAVE to start taking it prior to ovulation?

I was prescribed progesterone only pill to try holding me over until my hysterectomy. Does ovulating guarantee bleeding regardless of what medication is taken? Will the pill even work to prevent bleeding or do I have to wait until my 2 day window after menstruation but before the next ovulation?

In the past if I didn’t start taking it at exactly the right time to prevent ovulation, it didn’t prevent menstruation and actually made it severely heavier and caused severe pain when I had never experienced pain in my life.
