Lamotrigine ever help you sleep?
Post Body

Hey y'all, I'm recently diagnosed with cyclothymia or bipolar 2 (therapist and psych are both saying it could be either one?) and the psych says I should start with lamotrigine.

The thing is, I have really bad insomnia. I've been in therapy a long time and have tried a million techniques to no avail. I tried antidepressants that typically make you sleepy, but in hindsight it's obvious why that didn't help... My doc is reeeeally hesitant to prescribe any of the heavier sleep aids, and says that maybe my sleep will get better if I'm properly medicated for my bipolarity. I want to get that in check, obviously, but I'm desperate to treat the insomnia because it's quite literally ruining my life. I've seen a ton of research on lamotrigine causing sleep issues, so I'm pretty worried that it will make the insomnia worse instead of better. I end up in a loop with the doctors - We won't consider sleep meds until we treat for bipolar 2, and lamotrigine is always the first stabilizer we try for that no matter what.

So tomorrow I'll be filling my first script to start titrating lamotrigine. I don't feel like I have much of a choice. But I'm getting really anxious now, and I feel like it's going to be really hard for me to force myself to take the meds properly knowing that it might make this life-destroying insomnia even worse than it already is. I'm trying to remind myself that getting the bipolar under control could actually help with sleep. Has anyone here had that be the case? Like, you had sleep issues prior and they're better now?
