Has anyone here finished a PhD while on medication? What about off of medication? What was your field of study. What words of advice would you have to someone who is trying to finish their dissertation while facing a new bipolar diagnosis? I made the decision not to go on medication until I'm finished because I'm scared the medication will dumb me down cognitively and creatively. I know someone who is on antipsychotics for schizophrenia and he is a zombie. He can barely do anything but sleep, eat, and play video games. Antipsychotics and mood stabilizers terrify me. I'm BPII if that helps.

Same! They never really talk much about the impacts of a PhD programs on mental health. Itβs something that tends to be swept under the rug. I would recommend being completely upfront with your dissertation chair/advisor. They will be able to help you navigate and advocate for you, regardless of whether or not you decide to take meds.
