I have had very few positive examples of friendship in life and am trying to relearn how to be a good friend and what a healthy friendship looks like. After some observation, it seems that my personality disorder plays a huge part in how I engage in or even perceive friendships.
So I'm curious about what the greater bipolar community thinks. Is friendship hard for you? Do you have many or keep a small circle? Do you talk every day? What activities do you do?
I have my best friend that I have had since middle school. She has seen it all and still loves me. She's in another state though.
I have 3 really good friends that are local. We didn't meet until after I was diagnosed and medicated, but they all know I'm bipolar and they love and support me. They accept that some days I'm not getting out of bed or leaving the house, and they know if I can't stop talking about sex they need to point it out to me so I can take a step back and see if I'm getting manic.
We have dinner weekly, spend at least part of our weekends together. Always something fun to do, even if it's just watch a movie at someone's house together.
My friend group is more solid in the past 3 years than it has been since high school. My 40 s were a lonely time.

I joined a meetup group on Meetup.com. it's a group of women geeks. I went to a beer tasting event with a friend and met some fun ladies. Then I went to another event, Evil Dead the Musical, with 2 people and 1 is now my bestie. I kept going to events and running into the same people and soon we started talking and seeing each other outside of formal events and now I have a solid crew of strong, smart, beautiful women as my friends.
We've added to the circle, inviting people that are always at the same events we are. We are 8 strong now and we see movies and play games and go out to eat (a lot) and talk everyday and I am so happy.
