I have a bachelors in computer science honors, and have been working a steady job for the last 3 years. One thing I was always taught was that you not only need to enjoy the coding, but enjoy the field. Unfortunately I haven't really enjoyed the field of satellites and space. What I have found really interesting is bioinformatics, so I was planning on going for my Masters to get my foot in the door in the field, but there are a few problems.
Based on what I've read, roughly 80% of jobs are research, which encourage a PhD, and the other 20% is industry, which ends up doing several tasks not related to bioinformatics, so the degree is questionable. I'm more interested in industry, doing what I already enjoy, just in a field I'm passionate about, but sounds like it wouldn't even be worth the Masters.
The other problem is the pay. I don't mind a minor paycut for something I enjoy more. However, I've heard it pays significantly less than a normal programmer, and I'm not sure if it's worth paying for school for 2-3 years, to end up in a position paying far less, when instead I could find a different position/field I equally enjoy, and be earning money instead.
I don't actually mind the software development, I'd actually rather focus on that, I just want to do it in a field I enjoy
Ok sweet I'll look into that! Nope I'm up north in Quebec
I do find it interesting, but it's just one field of comp sci. What I meant was I can search for a different non bioinformatics position that I still enjoy, and not required to get a Masters.
Yeah that's exactly it. I'm more interested in developing than research

Yeah I have a friend who just started in Amazon and his starting wage is pretty insane. Not sure if I'd even want to work at Amazon, but if I can work a job I love equally as much without a Masters, then is the 2-3 years of tuition for a Masters even worth it?
Since you're stepping back for your PhD are you focusing on research?
