There have been a few papers on this. Basically the majority of menstrual blood isn’t actually blood but mucous (by volume). A basic expectorant (like Mucinex) can thin it for easier clearance.
The cramps caused by thicker mucous passing through an cervix that hasn’t dilated can also be lessened.
It can also result in less actual bleeding.

I think so because after I had kids my menstrual cramps are waaaaay less painful. I'm assuming because my cervix opens up more easily to let the blood and clots pass that my uterus doesn't need to cramp as much.
