I can’t help but worry. Now that Bini is gaining international attention, I hope the management does not neglect their original audience. I hope they keep the very inclusive and very Filipino identity that made Bini resonate with women and lgbt members.
I noticed in the past, the girls spoke so freely. When asked about their celeb crushes in their video with Robbie Domingo, they were able to mention their girl crushes as well. In the interview with Karen Davila, Mikha was about to mention her girl crush “Pag girl po…” but was interrupted. There was a cut then she gave the most generic heartthrob answer (Piolo Pascual). If the girls want to be open, let them. We shouldn’t follow Korea’s example in suppressing or controlling the identities of their idols. We take the good parts (like their dance training system, etc.) but we shouldn’t adopt all aspects of their management style. Bini has always been for women and there are many different kinds of women. I feel each member of Bini represents the Filipina exceptionally well and it would be such a loss if the members started hiding their individual identities.
I’m also worried that because they’ll now be able to work with international producers, songwriters, and choreographers, that they’ll lose that very Filipino look and sound that we should be able to share with the world. My favorite songs of theirs are either fully in Filipino or in Taglish. If the international audience wants to appreciate and be fans of Bini, let them. But Bini shouldn’t have to adjust their sound and identity just to be more internationally marketable. I hope they don’t come out with only english songs in the future.
I do have more thoughts about Bini and P-Pop’s place and potential in more than just the music industry in the Philippines. But I just wanted to let this out.
