What might have caused this chain to break?

11 speed Shimano XT drivetrain. Its a relatively new chain. I use the quick link so I've never removed and added back pins. Today it broke on me while riding.
Internet says shifting under load can cause, which I'm pretty good about not doing.
I did have another chain break on me last year, but that time it broke on the quick link.
