I've been biking around DC for the last 4 months or so and have had a few close calls with cars but nothing serious. This morning, though, I was biking down Van Ness and a car turned left on to Van Ness in front of me and then decided to immediately turn right off Van Ness. I could see that the driver wasn't looking when they pulled out in front of me so was already starting to slow down but given that I was on a hill my stopping distance wasn't great and as the car turned right I very unceremoniously collided with the passenger side of the car. Fortunately, as I was already slowing down, it wasn't too serious. A few scrapes and bruises and a a couple of scratches on the bike. I think the driver was more a lot more traumatized than me. I was pretty angry so just assured the driver I was alright and got on my way. No serious injuries and no serious damage so no harm, no foul.
But, for future reference, what do others do in these situations? Should every collision be reported no matter how minor it is? Is it wise to get the contact and insurance info of the driver?
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated as I'm sure this won't be the last time.
