Has anyone seen a jump in 404s within their Search Console 'URL Errors Not found' report? After this recent algo update, I'm seeing a huge jump (5K to 125K) in 404 errors. These recently detected 404s are very old and unwanted pages. We're talking parts of the site that's been removed almost 10 years ago. Even the 'linked from' details are pointing to long removed pages of our site. It's worth noting, the site I work on is 20 years old and with millions of pages. The dev team never wants to use 410s, so we let them 404 when we have no good redirect for them.
Update: John Mueller "We looked into a couple of these reports and they were essentially just our algorithm saying, oh I I have all these old URLs I just want to double check." https://www.seroundtable.com/google-increase-in-crawl-errors-22669.html
So, it looks like it wasn't directly due to the algo update, but they've decided to double check a lot of old and forgotten pages.
