new to bicycling - 1st time buyer

Hello everyone,
I am looking to get into bicycling and am need some advice on a good starter bicycle. I will mainly be riding on paved roads, neighborhoods, and light trails. I think I am wanting a hybrid bike but don't want to break the bank. I would like to eventually bike to work which is about 8-10 miles away. I simply can't afford a $500 bike right now but realize you get what you pay for. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start. Thanks in advance.
