Quick background... Wednesday night I was riding my bike, legally, on the side of the road like I should, when a black Jeep flew around the corner, clipped me and kept going. I was knocked off of my bike and after breaking momentarily, the car took off. I know that they know that they hit me. I cracked their front passenger headlight casing and pretty sure I dented their car.
What infuriates me is the following:
Though many friends have been supportive, a lot of people ask how drunk I was. It was in the early evening, I hadn't a drop to drink.
Other friends ask, "You were swerving in and out of the road weren't you?" I was literally doing nothing wrong or illegal. The car hit me and kept going. That's illegal.
I live in Ohio were cyclists are viewed as bad as drug users in some cities. There are Facebook groups aimed at "Kill all cyclists" and the like. It's infuriating.
My injuries are as follows: Concussion, sprained wrist, road rash (including stitches in my temple), bruised shoulder and a torn PCL/ACL. I have to pay for ALL of this out of my own pocket because the perpetrator fled the scene.
I am not as active on my bike as many of you, but I do see cycling as a calming and enjoying past time. I bike a lot with my friends and it's been fun to do as the weather cools.
I guess what really grinds my gears is that if I were driving my car and someone hit me, people would be up in arms blaming them. But since I decided to take two wheels out instead of four, it must have been something I did wrong.
And, for those interested, the bike is trashed. Bent frame. It was a 1972 Raleigh Gran Sport. Her name was Tiffany and she will be sorely missed.
I guess the point of this post is to ask... what can I do here? I have already filed a police report but since there were no witnesses and no cameras, there's nothing much to be done. I didn't get the plate because they had a tinted license plate cover much like this. I don't wish incredible ill will on this person, but I am afraid due to their reaction to this accident that they could possibly do it again.
Thank you for reading my ramblings,
Be safe out there friends.
Edit... Someone asked how I cracked the passenger side light casing. I was about to turn right on a two lane road. Riding on the sidewalks is illegal. I was doing exactly what I was supposed to, signaling and all.
