Hello Bicyclers of Reddit!
My name is Steven, and this year I'm deciding to do something a little different for my 18th Birthday. Instead of having a huge party in my honor, I decided to take a more giving approach. I turn 18 on September 21 which happens to be the same date as a popular event called Bike to the Bay in Dover, DE. This summer I got hooked on biking. I bike almost everyday for fitness and its overall fun (as you all know). My father is also into biking and decided to do this event with me.
Anyway, the event is a biking event. 175 Miles with rest stops in between from Dover, DE to Dewy Beach, DE. The money goes to the National MS Society and helps fund the campaign for MS. For those who want more information here is their site with more information.
As this is a fundraising event, I am currently going to start the fundraising process. As this being my first time and never doing anything like this before, I am not sure how high or low to set my goal. I'm trying to think of as many ways as possible to raise money and this came to mind. If you want to support me in my ride for MS you can click this link. Feel free to pm me or comment about any questions and I'd be happy to answer them and talk to you. If you live in delaware or are doing this event please let me know! If we get enough redditors then maybe we can make a reddit team?
More About Me
I am currently 17 and got hooked on biking this year. I have a mountain bike and have been doing that for the past year but more intensely these past few months. Just recently discovering Strava, I decided to go all out and buy a road bike, suit, shoes etc. I'm willing to spend 700$ of my savings on a bike (maybe more depending on how the bike selection is looking) and my parents have agreed to buy me my suit and accessories. I am doing this because I found a great liking for the sport and enjoy road biking as well as off road. I'll probably make the purchase within a week possibly two, depending on a few factors.
I found out about this event through a friend who happened to mention this event fell right on my birthday and immediately jumped on the opportunity to partake in it. I'll be participating in a two races before hand to get some more practice in (25miles each) but neither compare fully to the 175 mile event in september. This event is NOT a race though, in fact I do not believe there are even times.
Here is my Strava profile which I have to set a picture and other things when I get home in about a week. I do not have many rides simply because I just found the app. Feel free to follow me and I'll follow you back! I plan to use it on the day of the Event and will have a follow up post so you can how I did.
Thank You
If you donated I thank you! If you even take the time to read 1/3 of this I thank you! I not only made this post to try to raise money, but also to attempt to raise some awareness for the race and hope to see other Redditors out there on September 21!
TL;DR I'll be doing my first long distance bike event on my 18th birthday and am trying to raise money. Also wondering if any redditors want to start a team for the event.
