supplemental short term disability insurance?

Post Body

So I found out last week that even though standard STD insurance for illness or injury at my organization covers 60% income after 8 weeks until 26 weeks, they consider maternity leave to be a non-medical leave (we do get a medical leave for post-partum for 8 weeks which is separate from what they call child-rearing leave).

I know 16 weeks is more than a lot of people get, and I get it covered at 100% pay which is really great, but I really wanted to stay home with my kid as long as possible.

Has anyone considered or purchased supplemental STD insurance, and was it worth it? What companies did you use?

Thanks for any thoughts you can provide!

PS we need paid maternity leave in the US, nationwide.
