Does sleep training (crying methods) effect babies negatively?

After looking up sleep training methods, specifically the Ferber Method and Cry It Out method, I have had mixed results about the effects it has on the babies behaviour development, attatchment and more. Some websites say it has no effect and others say it has negative effects. I am not sure which to trust and was wondering if anyone knows or has had experiences with the effects. Cheers!
