So today I we had an in home visit with one of our nurses and when she found out we were using powdered formula she was very adamant that we needed to be boiling the water we're making it with, letting it cool, adding the formula, and then storing in the fridge.
We live in a city with good water that is regularly tested, and so we have been just using tap water to make the formula prior to this. Obviously I'll do what I need to do for her to thrive, but making powdered formula seems like a large hassle now when we're already sleep deprived and I'm mentally struggling (which is being monitored).
Baby is 20 days old, was born full term, and other than having some issues gaining weight the first week and some mild jaundice they were monitoring (but no interventions for) is very healthy.
Do I need to boil the water? Or is the nurse just doing her job by explaining the ideal way to do it?
Yep there is potentially harmful bacteria in powder formula that can only be killed by boiling water so its not a case of the water not being safe its the formula.
