For some reason, I cannot stop thinking about such a mundane seeming moment in this last ep.
So we know Kim and Yup guy already had their discussion about Miracle Whip vs. mayo and Kim used the Miracle Whip.
Then later on when she’s eating with her coworkers and one of them goes “what’s that” and she replies kind of meekly, “I made tuna with Miracle Whip”, unsure if it was the right thing to do.
I can’t put my finger on it, but this line delivery completely sold her whole new character dynamic to me and I was able to really understand her. Old Kim would have made up her mind about whether Miracle Whip was appropriate or not right away, and she never would have questioned it after that initial mental equation. New Kim refuses to make decisions; we never really saw her in this mode where she is unsure and is actually sharing this uncertainty with others. It’s just foreign seeing her doing something so normal, except when you start to realize it’s so not normal for her.
She says it almost with a hint of amusement, like “can you guys believe I made tuna with Miracle Whip? That pretty silly right?” For someone who has made entirely her own decisions for so long, it’s like learning a whole new language or way of life and interaction. Meanwhile this is the same wavelength most others live on, just floating by with lingering uncertainties and the fleeting affects of complacency.
Such a seemingly meaningless line but it says so damn much, and the way she says it. She's not saying it as though she knows her boyfriend made the wrong decision, and she regrets going along with it. She's saying it like she truly doesn't know if she's right. Her superpower of quick thinking and confident action is just completely gone, like she buried her sword purposely to atone for past mistakes, and now she not only forgot where it was buried, but doesn't even remember how to use it in the first place.
