I'm listening to Michael Moore's podcast RUMBLE and his guest is author and reporter Anand Giridharadas and Anand made a couple of points regarding Bernie's campaign and where to take what we've been hearing these last few years:
- Telling people what America would look like if these policies were in place. In short, a portrait of what an America would look like if there were no more hospital bills to worry about, no more worry about debt over past college tuition, to be able to take a vacation because you have the money you earn to save for things for your family, etc. In short, creating a picture of a Sanders' America.
- This other point he made was to make connections with others who share your desire of a Sanders' America. It has to go beyond Twitter, Facebook, or other social media platforms. WE need to connect with one another locally to find others who share the desire to see this kind of America happen in our own backyard. Giridharadas pointed to the Civil Rights Movement and how the people involved in the movement knew each other, knew their families, knew that even though they may not have anything in common with some of those participating they know that the movement was about them as much as it is for themselves. That kind of solidarity will allow you to fight for them and willing to go the distance to see the kind of America that benefits all.
I guess my point is I am going to try and seek out others who live locally where I live and try and connect with them. I need face to face time and not just sitting behind my keyboards clicking "like" and "burns" but to actually get involved. I work in a workplace where over 90% of the people are Trump supporters and I need a space to find connection and community. I also need a place to stop ranting with my partner and the TV as well.
My challenge to all of us is let's show our friends and neighbors what the policies Bernie brings to the table look like by painting a mural for them to see. Let this picture be a living picture that includes all of us in a world that doesn't have to be so grievous but that we all share helping each other achieve the kind of "life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" we all deserve.
