Wanted to get some insight on this potential opportunity.
Some background, I have a 6 year old Norwegian cat and I'm looking to get a second cat. We've decided on a bengal. Weve found someone whose listed themselves as a breeder and has 3 kittens. They're selling them as TICA registered at 8 weeks old, with breeding rights, and at what seems like 50% less than other pure bred Bengals in my area of the PNW.
I have no intention of breeding and am planning to have the kitten immediately neutered. But, I'm skeptical since I'm reading on this forum that selling breeding rights to an inexperienced individual might be a red flag.
Would love some input on how to figure out if these are just rural people that love breeding for fun or if they're selling at a deal because they know they're skirting some rules.
Edit: I wanted to thank everyone for your input! I took all your questions and fired them at this older couple selling these kittens. I wanted give everyone an update.
I ended up getting this kitten for a few reasons, and wanted to share my rationale. Let me preface all this by saying that I care deeply about ethical treatment standards and quality care. With that being said this guy didn't know how to answer any of the info you guys gave me. He had no idea to have a cardiologist check his females, didn't seem knowledgeable about the tica code of ethics. But, what I saw when I went to his cattery swung me from this guy is a hack, to this seems fairly reasonable, was the condition he kept them in and the love he had for them.
So here's the update. Got the kitten for $500, it was 10 weeks old. Had fleas but was able to give it medication after a bath and a nice flea comb. Taking him to the vet tomorrow to get an initial check-up and discuss neutering. Had a squinty eye from the fleas which is improving but will ask the vet about. But the biggest thing I've learned about this particular kitten is that he has a glitter gene, which makes him glisten in the right lighting.
Again, I don't want to encourage backyard breeders that harm animals, but this ended up being what I think might have been a diamond in the rough.
If anyone wants future updates let me know.
