Tips on putting in a new alternator?
Post Body

Hey fellow beetle enthusiasts,

I recently replaced the alternator in my 74 Super with only mild cussing/injuries after the previous one's bearings were shot. After driving it for a couple of weeks, the current alternator began showing the same symptoms (i.e., bad bearings). So, I got back in and pulled the new one out, and, sure enough, the bearings were shot again.

Best I can tell is that either 1) I was sold an already crappy alternator or 2) something about how I installed the alternator or tightened the fan belt made the bearings go bad super fast.

Anybody else encounter a similar problem and/or have any suggestions on what to do when I install the new one?
