Can someone explain to me how Untappd works?

I live in Franconia in Germany which many believe has some of the world's best beer. There's so much to choose from and I think the quality is extremely good. I always look up every beer I drink and am yet to find one rated over 3.5. Seems like the only 5 star rated beers are craft stouts and IPAs from the States (usually over 8 abv)
