I'm just going to blast a bunch of thoughts out here because I haven't had anybody to talk to about this movie. People are constantly gnashing on pills but as far as I can tell none of them do anything. The only thing that gets anybody f***** up is when beau smokes a joint.
Obviously Beau's moms influence over his life is huge, and she's very wealthy. Many of the people that beau encounters in his journey actually work for his mom. Is his neighborhood as bad as it really is, or is his neighborhood intentionally s**. She is keeping him in a s** neighborhood, or she is making his neighborhood s*****. The way I saw it on first viewing was that everywhere he goes he is surrounded by the world that is created by his mother. Are the people in his neighborhood acting? Obviously she knows that his shrink is not giving him adequate care. Does he have anxiety that is actually untreated because he and everybody around him is gnashing on fake pills, where is it he actually relatively okay and he's just surrounded by an anxiety causing experience. In my interpretation, Beau's environment is basically like a Truman show-esque scripted experience that his mother is controlling to make him more anxious than typical. Either that is actually happening, or that is metaphorically happening. The legacy of Beau's mom's crappy mood and manipulation is making him anxious. She makes his world the way it is.
Parent puts s*** on child. Child sees world through s***** lens for rest of life.
