Brushing direction?

Is it okay to brush the part from under my jaw upwards and towards my cheeks?
If I brush it all straight down, it clumps up under my jaw line and looks like I've only gone a neckbeard with nothing on top.
I don't want to look like I'm 'combovering' my beard either by brushing it up though, is there something else I should do or is this fine?
