I’m still so shaken up. I was walking in West Portal today with my 1-year-old son and a guy came right up to us, stared us right in the eyes and said, “I’m gonna kill you.” Luckily, he walked away before I felt the need to run or defend myself. Similar situations have happened like this in WP. (Throwing glass bottles right next to my head, screaming profanities, etc.) I’ve worked downtown for 3 years. I know and am used to crazies. I usually just keep my head down and ignore them, but with my son with me, I’m just so scared something will actually happen and I can’t take that chance. I definitely see homelessness rising due to the pandemic. It’s really sad. I love this city, but it’s another thing to try and raise your children here in a safe environment.
My question is, do you think the surrounding San Francisco areas are getting more unsafe, or am I just more paranoid since I have a child? Trying to weigh moving to Marin or surrounding suburb area now or move later when the economic market potentially turns.
Thank you all for your advice.
P.S. - To try and balance out the bad juju in WP, right after that happened, I asked the homeless man in front of Walgreens what he wanted from the store. I bought him a lunch/drink and he was so grateful.
