Best place to live for night life near San Mateo?

My company is sending me off to work in Foster City for about 6-12 months. I heard it was kinda boring around there though, so I am looking for somewhere with decent night life in or around San Mateo. Ideally I'd like to be in walking distance of whatever concentration of bars/clubs are there.

I was also wondering how safe San Mateo is? Are there any rough areas I should avoid looking for apartments in?

Also is Burlingame active at night? I've only recently heard of it.

Sorry for all the questions, I know next to nothing about the bay area.
