Why do people see caviar as rich?

Post Body
Caviar is often played up as a ritsy thing, I remember one time I even went to a nice bar in palo alto and was enjoying some johnny walker gold and they tried offering caviar.
Some higher end resturaunts even seem to offer caviar in the same way places like the cheesecake factory offers bread.
Kind of makes me think of how crazy people get about shell fish (lobster and crab) which both taste kinda lame to me. I've never seen them as worth their money.
Does anyone out here even actually like caviar?
