I think the book was fun but I still don't see the point of it? When they announced it as a reinterpretation of Batman that was supposed to be more edgy(cause we have never see n edgier reinterpretations of Batman before) and without all his resources, meaning he would be fighting the system and understanding the struggles of the common folk and blah blah blah I rolled my eyes because both Daredevil and Red Hood fit the second description. To me, what makes Batman fun is the fact that he was born in a privileged position but upon being a victim of something the common folk deal with(violence and crime) he decides to use his privilege to do something about it. I frankly don't get why people insist on reimagining characters by going: "What if we took the thing that made this character cool in the first place and removed it?". In other words, when I heard about this pitch I thought it was basically an edgy version of Earth-1 Batman. What I did like about Absolute Batman though is that this is mostly told from Alfred's point of view, not only that, he is an enemy of Batman. This is actually an interesting reimagination of Batman, where he doesn't have his most important and most iconic ally(Alfred is Batman's main ally, not Dick Grayson, but that's a discussion for another post). Not only that this version of Batman, unlike the main version, grew up with at least a family member present there. This is actually interesting stuff to explore and left me wanting to see more(I haven't been excited about ongoing comics since Rebirth), does Martha know about what Bruce is up to? How did that shape his relationship with others? These are questions I'm interested in getting answers for and I also want to see more about this version of Alfred
I honestly read this comic out of morbid curiosity and I'm genuinely excited about it now. But I still feel like the things people were criticizing(or rather poking fun) this comic for prior to it's release is valid. Batman's design still looks stupid, his symbol becoming an axe is dumb and the scene where he uses it to slice a criminal's hand made me cringe and the stuff that I actually enjoyed about it was not talked about at all in the marketing of.
TL;DR: I think there's some dumb stuff there, but overall the comic is pretty good
