Buying and selling on eBay/Mercari

I’ve seen several places and I’m curious how frequent this is, that cards are opened or resealed or swapped with less quality of the same card. Who has experience with this and is there any way to prevent this other than buying from a reputable seller? Same goes if I want to start selling to ensure my stuff doesn’t swap out or get returned or opened etc.
