Hi r/baseball. Me again.
A little over a week ago, we added a rule restricting "Elimination Posts". We wanted to make it easier to know when a team would be officially eliminated so more people could prepare for the 'big event' and join in the fun, but that came at the cost of interesting - and legitimate - cases where teams were technically eliminated even if their Tragic Number was 1 .
We were wrong to make that change, and we're removing the rule effective immediately. Thank you to everyone who chimed in on both sides of the aisle (even though it was predominantly one-sided). The new rule is as follows:
Clinch/Elimination Posts
Only the following posts will be allowed regarding clinching or elimination from the MLB Postseason:
- Team eliminated from postseason contention
- Please include the context of the elimination in the OP (e.g. "With the Yankees' loss tonight their Tragic Number has reached 0")
- If the elimination is more technical than Tragic Number, you must show your work (e.g. "The Yankees have only 70 losses, but because the Orioles and Blue Jays still play 3 more games against each other, at least one will reach 93 wins")
- Team clinching playoff appearance
- As with elimination posts, please include the context of the clinch (and show your work if necessary) (e.g. "With the Red Sox win tonight and the Yankees' and Mariners' loss, the Sox are guaranteed a playoff spot!")
- Team clinching division
- Again, please include context (e.g. "With the Orioles' loss today, the Red Sox have clinched the AL East!")
- Team clinching First Wild Card spot
- One last time, please include context (e.g. "With the Orioles' win today and the Blue Jays' loss, the Orioles have clinched the First Wild Card!")
ALL POSTS should more or less follow the standard formula:
- "THE NEW YORK YANKEES HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFF CONTENTION"
- "THE BOSTON RED SOX HAVE CLINCHED A PLAYOFF SPOT"
- "THE BOSTON RED SOX HAVE CLINCHED THE DIVISION"
- "THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES HAVE CLINCHED THE FIRST WILD CARD SPOT"
NOTE: Creativity within these bounds is still acceptable
Note that elimination from a division, and clinching specifically a Wild Card spot are both NOT ALLOWED and will be removed.
Also, keep an eye out later this week for a frequently requested feature making a comeback!
Oh and before any Yankees fans give me flak for using the Yankees in my examples: I got permission and totally didn't Photoshop this
