Context: With one out and the bases loaded and the Marlins up 1-0, Todd Frazier hits a shallow fly ball off the end of his bat into right field. Zach Cozart tags up at third base and sprints home in a foolish effort to beat the throw to the plate, and is tagged out by a mile without even sliding by Jeff Mathis, who is blocking the plate. While initially called out, Bryan Price argues and the call is overturned after a long instant replay review. The Reds go on to score two more runs as well, making the score 3-1. Talking here as a Reds fan, I'm sorry Marlins fans. The rule this year put in place to "protect" catchers from home plate collisions is one of the stupidest rules ever created along with instant replay. Major league baseball is instituting more ways to make the game of baseball more complicated when it is already one of the most complicated sports in existence. The slow arduous process of instant replay inhibits the flow and momentum of a game already known for being one of the slowest paced in existence. The catcher puts himself at risk by choice when blocking the plate, and an act that bans home plate collisions is simply not needed. If catchers and managers wanted to limit the amount of injuries due to home plate collisions they would teach catchers not to block the plate as they did in years past. If catchers didn't want to risk getting railed before this rule, they should not have blocked the plate. As A.J. Pierzenski said, "next, they're going to tell us that you can't slide into the guy at second base." This is just my opinion, and I know many will disagree, but I thought i'd share.
