What is arbitration?

Congratulations, /r/baseball, we made it to the end! The arbitration process has been completed! Now it's time for some breakdowns:

  • 176 - Number of players eligible for arbitration
  • 39 - Number of players who exchanged salary proposals with their team
  • 26 - Number of players in their final year of arbitration
  • 23 - Number of Super-Twos
  • 14 - Number of players who signed multi-year contracts
  • 3 - Number of players who participated in actual arbitration hearings
  • 1 - Number of players who won their arbitration hearings

On the team side:

  • 30 - Number of teams who had arbitration-eligible players
  • 19 - Number of teams who exchanged salary proposals with their players
  • 2 - Number of teams who participated in arbitration hearings

Who were the big winners? Well, it's hard to say. All three Braves players who exchanged proposals with their team received multi-year contracts taking them at least to the end of their arbitration eligibility, so perhaps that was the best win for players. The Indians were able to undercut all but one player with whom they exchanged proposals (undercut meaning agreeing a number below the two sides' midpoint); the only player they couldn't was Brantley. And Andrew Cashner was the only player to win an arbitration hearing.

The biggest losers? Both Vinnie Pestano and Josh Tomlin lost their arbitration hearings. For players who settled, Tyler Clippard took the biggest win of money above the midpoint for his proposal with the Nationals. The Padres were the only team to actually lose their arbitration hearing with a player this year.

So that's it, /r/baseball, no more chapters to this year's arbitration hearings. Hopefully this has kept you interested or at least distracted from the lack of Major League action going on, and if nothing else at least you've learned a bit more about the arbitration process as a whole.

Be on the lookout next year, as Mike Trout will be among players eligible for arbitration going into the 2015 season. Here are others joining him next year (assuming they play a full season):

  • Yonder Alonso
  • Henderson Alvarez
  • Domonic Brown
  • Matt Carpenter
  • Aroldis Chapman (pending a $5 million option)
  • Tyler Chatwood
  • Brandon Crawford
  • Josh Donaldson
  • Sean Doolittle
  • Nathan Eovaldi
  • Todd Frazier
  • Jason Kipnis
  • Daniel Nava
  • Wilin Rosario
  • Kyle Seager
  • Andrelton Simmons
  • Eric Sogard
