Simply, I'm Australian and am playing my second summer season as a catcher on my club's women's side. When the summer mixed team (composed only of men) are low on numbers I get called up to play 9th, and during the mixed winter comp I play and sometimes catch in the lowest division (depends on if the better catcher is called into a higher div team that weekend or not).
Our women's team last summer was made for the first time ever and we were almost all entirely new to the game. We learned together but were absolutely fuckin smashed week in, week out. Fair enough, we were all learning basic skills like how to actually throw a ball lmao. Unfortunately many of our players didn't return this season, so cohesion isn't there and we're still learning. Some of us are getting more advanced but being the afterthought team (as the men are a competition team and we're still getting beat) our coach is usually busy teaching the basics over and over and running training.
Bottom line, I feel like I don't know what the hell I'm doing any time I have a ball in my hand. Beyond having a runner on one and throwing over to two, I don't really know where I should be throwing a ball and when, and as the catcher I would like to be able to call out plays to my team so they know exactly what we're doing. I just can't find any list of every option when runners are on each base. Or being able to tell my infielders when they're fielding on the grass vs. the dirt, you know? Because how are they supposed to know and remember those things if we haven't been taught?
I put a lot of pressure on myself to do right by my team and be the glue or whatever. When it's quiet in the dugout I'm always the one reminding them to encourage the next batter or our runners, or calling out to my infield to support the pitcher. I just want to know what's going on so we have less instances of ladies fielding the ball and then holding it for 10 seconds while they work out who they're trying to throw it to next all the time. Wins are good for morale and it's getting to the point of being incredibly embarrassing to be beaten by brand new teams when we have a season on them and should have progressed at least a little.
Is there anywhere that has like diagrams and descriptions of where runners are and what the corresponding plays are/could be? I just want to improve even a little.
Many thanks if you made it this far
